Canon Printer Cartridges, like all printer cartridges, are expensive. If you find you suddenly need to replace one and buy it locally, the price will usually be very expensive, but there are other options available.
Why are they so expensive? It's no surprise that printer manufacturers often make much more money on cartridges than the printers themselves. In fact they often lose money on selling printers!
You can buy original Canon Printer Cartridges online. For
example
CLICK HERE for great deals on Canon Printer Cartridges from Amazon,
and often you can get free shipping as well from Amazon and other places, as
well as a discount below list price. My local stores charge list price (plus
tax).
You can also buy Canon Compatible Cartridges for less. These might be made by a different manufacturer or often are original Canon Cartridges which have been refilled/recycled. Amazon also has these at great prices.
One additional option is to refill your used cartridges or take them a store that refills them. In my areas, Cartridge World (a chain) refills almost everything. I haven't refilled cartridges myself, although there are kits available as well as videos on YouTube showing how, and it seems quite simple.

If you don't refill your printer cartridges, do NOT throw them away! Over ten a second are discarded and end up in landfills! You may find a postage paid envelope supplied with your new cartridge to return it for recycling, and if not some stores will accept them and maybe even pay you for them! My local Staples Office Supply store has recently been paying three dollars per empty cartridge!
You have a multitude of options available. You can buy official Canon Cartridges as my photographer does for his Canon Photo Printer. You can buy compatible cartridges for less, or you can refill or have yours refilled. Worst case though, recycle your empty cartridges!
I've tried almost all options and am happy having mine refilled or buying compatibles. I haven't refilled any myself, but with the availability of kits I may try that next to save further money.
